Louisville Neighborhood Cleanup

While busy with their daily lives, people may not realize how much certain parts of Louisville are deteriorating. This can greatly disturb the city’s atmosphere. Seeing such deterioration, Church of God volunteers decided to take action. On Sunday, February 19, they carried out a neighborhood cleanup to spruce up neglected parts of South Hurstbourne Parkway.

About 25 volunteers of the World Mission Society Church of God in Louisville partnered with Brightside and other community members to clean up a one-mile stretch of South Hurstbourne Parkway. This is in conjunction with the city of Louisville’s goal to beautify its neighborhoods. Volunteers ranging from the ages of 14 to 40 participated in the cleanup. Some drove as far as Fort Knox to help clean up the area.

The volunteers arrived at the cleanup site, prepped and ready with rakes, shovels, brooms, gloves, trash pickers and trash bags. Upon arrival, the volunteers were surprised to see all of the things that have accumulated in the area. There was a variety of trash and debris that included plywood, milk crates, scrap metal, parts from cars, a wooden palette, pieces of plastic and empty bottles. While finding such large quantities of trash, the volunteers felt compelled to tackle the garbage-ridden area even more. At the end of the day, more than 40 bags of trash were collected.

“We always want to strive to make the community cleaner, greener and sustainable, and you absolutely did accomplish that today,” said Lorri Roberts, Brightside Volunteer Director. “It goes a long way not just for our organization but for all the community. It means a lot to everyone. Thank you so much!”

“Volunteering is one of the most amazing feelings, especially working with people in the community who have the same interest in protecting the environment,” expressed a Church of God volunteer. “It really makes a difference in places of need throughout the city.”

With plans for future neighborhood cleanup opportunities like this, the Church of God hopes that more community members will join. Church members yearn for everyone to work together with the same aspirations, sharing the love of Heavenly Mother throughout Louisville. In this way, Louisville’s neighborhoods and surrounding areas of Kentucky will be restored to their original state.
